For those who might have missed the New York Times over the weekend, David Sanger has an important article on cyber deterrence and the White House discussions of how it might be done, given the OPM theft of data that has angered almost anyone with a security clearance. That is a lot of voters. I'm going to write more on this, but for those who keep up on this kind of work, it is worth reading the piece at http://www.nytimes.com/2015/08/01/world/asia/us-decides-to-retaliate-against-chinas-hacking.html?_r=0
First, Sanger has the best sources in cyber of anyone [sorry to those others who publish in this area, but you know it is true]. I take what he writes to be accurate and verifiable and this particular one is deep inside the White House, and as descriptive as his past stories on the Stuxnet covert program to undermine Iran's nuclear capability. Somebody in the White House is keeping him well informed about the goings on in cyber, and although I'm glad to have the information, I'm wondering how it is that they can release so much about the classified meetings they have in this White House - to anybody - knowing it will be made public.
