China made it sound like they were responding to US announced trade tariffs by jacking up the duties on soybeans. That is not the truth of the matter by any means.
China cut purchases of US goods in April - soybeans, corn, and pork. They weren’t waiting for the announcement of US tariffs, and the US did not “fire the first shot in the trade war” as the press would have you believe. The justice of this all is that Brazil raised the price of soybeans they sell to China, so the US may be selling less, but China is paying more.
