Sometimes, Benjamin Netanyahu sounds like a character from Don Quixote, tilting at the Iran windmill, but yesterday he sounded like he might have lost a battle, but he sure wasn't going to take a chance on losing the war. I got the feeling that he was not going to sit around waiting for the results of the Iran Nuclear agreement to see if Iran could get a nuclear weapon. He quoted the General in charge of Iran's Army as saying he was glad to be in the forefront of the Supreme Leader's effort to destroy Israel, something that would not be missed by very many Israeli citizens.
Netanyahu is a really good speaker. He uses examples of Iran's meddling in Yemen and Lebanon in the last 6 months to get his point across that Iran was doing these things while the U.S., China and Russia et al were negotiating with them. That is current news and most of the people there (the U.S.ambassador to the U.N was not there, and you can make of that what you want) knew of these events, since they were in local papers. He used a 45 second pause to emphasize the silence of the U.N's member countries at the threats being made to Israel by members of the Iran government. That is drama, but effective at getting a few of the members to squirm in their seats. Not many speakers can wait that long, so don't try this at home. He used a quote from Yogi Berra, who just died last week and was an institution in the New York home of the U.N.
I just finished re-reading his book, Fighting Terrorism, where he says the world's collective governments got control of terrorism in the 80's when they all worked together. It reminded me of how the Russians managed to bomb CIA-backed rebels in the North of Syria for the last couple of days, in the name of fighting ISIS. If this is what working together means, we are in a lot of trouble. Russia and China were in on the Iran Nuclear negotiations and the U.S. seemed to believe we were all working from the same set of maps and charts. Doesn't look like that was a good assumption, does it?
